3i launches North American platform

20 March 2017 Investor 3i has launched a North American infrastructure business in the US.

The UK firm is establishing a team in New York and has recruited Rob Collins to lead it as managing partner, North America Infrastructure. 

Collins joins from Hastings Funds Management where he was head of global investments in North America and Europe. He will lead a team focused on building a portfolio of infrastructure investments in similar market segments to those where 3i has been successful in Europe.  

3i intends to fund North American investments initially with its own balance sheet with a view to deploying third-party capital in due course. 

Simon Borrows, chief executive, said: "3i has the ambition to build a significant business in this market and we are excited to have Rob join us.” 

The firm's infrastructure team of 25 advises and manages a number of infrastructure investment vehicles, including 3i Infrastructure and two PPP-focused funds, BIIF and BEIF II. Assets under management as at December 31, 2016 stood at £2.6bn.
