Miami’s flagship monorail project powers up

The Meridiam-led Miami Beach Monorail Consortium has been awarded the Beach Corridor section of the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) plan.

Under the plans, a 5.6km monorail system will be built between Midtown Miami and the Miami Beach, with the consortium describing it as a “vital link between the two cities in preparedness of both rising sea levels and the threat of storm surge during hurricanes”.

Earlier this year, Meridiam joined Genting and Aqualand Development in the consortium, after the group submitted an unsolicited proposal to Miami-Dade County the previous year.

Last week the county’s Citizens’ Independent Transport Trust held a special meeting to determine the future of the project.
