President authorizes FAST Act extension

US President Donald Trump has signed into law the bill that includes the continuation of surface transportation funding.

Trump signed the Continuing Appropriations Act, 2021 and Other Extensions Act, which ensures that a range of government functions and financial support will continue to be available.

Division B of the Act covers the extension of the government’s surface transportation program, including the FAST Act, which was signed into law in 2015 and has been a key driver in the development of P3 schemes for road projects across the country ever since.

The Act confirms that laws that “would otherwise expire on or cease to apply after September 30, 2020…shall continue in effect through September 30, 2021”.

Many in the US hope that the extension will give lawmakers the breathing space needed to develop a comprehensive infrastructure investment package that can be developed during the first year of the next presidential term.
