Former Republican presidential rival Ben Carson has been chosen by Trump to lead the department, despite having never held political office and having little experience in the housing sector.
Carson is a retired neurosurgeon, who threw his weight behind Trump after dropping out of the race to be the Republican candidate for president.
He has suggested that the new administration has “much work to do” to ensure the nation’s physical infrastructure is “solid”.
Last week, Trump nominated government veteran Elaine Chao for Transportation Secretary. Chao has worked in top-level government posts for the previous two Republican White Houses of George W Bush and George HW Bush.
