Illinois’s Secretary of Transportation Randy Blankenhorn has announced that the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is developing a priority list of improvements on major bridges across the state.
At the same time, IDOT is creating a separate list of needs for the bridges that cross over major rivers, including the border bridges with Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky and Indiana.
In an article for local press, Blankenhorn said: “There are 26,770 bridges in Illinois – the third-most of any state.“At [IDOT], bridges are among our most expensive, complicated projects. Because of that, we are becoming more focused than ever on viewing bridges and other key pieces of infrastructure as resources we must do our utmost to preserve and protect.”
Meanwhile, IDOT will host a public meeting in Bridgeview on December 6 to share updates and collect feedback on proposed changes to the I-55 managed lanes project.
The department recently updated the project plans to include a second managed lane in each direction of I-55 between Interstate 294 (Tri-State Tollway) and Interstate 90/94 (Dan Ryan Expressway).
No funding has been identified for construction, but IDOT continues to pursue the project as a P3.
