Uruguay launches rail P3

Uruguay’s ministry of transport and public works (MTOP) has launched the Central Rail Project.

The contract is to design, build, finance, upgrade and maintain the rail road Ferrocarril Central, between Montevideo’s Port and Paso de los Toros.

It will involve an 18-year contract, plus 36 months to complete works. A $12.4bn investment is expected of which a third ($4.1bn) will be privately financed through P3.

Works for the 273km rail track include a double track section of 26km in the initial stretch, a dozen secondary roads for train crossings, a section of road for industrial access and more than 40 railway bridges.

The project is expected to increase mobility in the region, as well as boosting  industries such as  agriculture, mining and forestry, amongst others.

Proposals are due April 9, 2018 at 11am, in the Tomas Berreta room of the Ministry of Transport and Public Works.

Victor Rossi, MTOP minister, expects to award the project in November 2018.
