Johnson majors on levelling up

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has focused his attention on his government’s efforts to ‘level up’ the economy.

Giving the keynote speech at the Conservative Party Conference, Johnson said levelling up “works for the whole country” adding that the imbalances are not simply between London and the rest of the country, but include “aching gaps within the regions themselves”.

He highlighted the government’s efforts to boost access to gigabit broadband as part of the levelling up agenda.

Johnson suggested that the UK’s infrastructure remains “way behind” other parts of the world, backing Northern Powerhouse Rail, the North Wales Corridor and other transport investments, which he described as “the great leveller upper”.
