AfDB invests in Kampala-Jinja PPP

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has signed an agreement with the Ugandan government to provide $229.5m in financing for the Kampala-Jinja road PPP.

Phase one of the road project aims to significantly reduce travel times between Jinja and Kampala along the northern corridor linking Uganda to its neighbours.

The project comprises the Kampala-Jinja Mainline Expressway and the Kampala Southern Urban Bypass. Currently at shortlist stage, the PPP scheme has four bidders vying to secure the deal.

“The public-private partnership model will bring in private sector participation and financing of a key infrastructure in Uganda and will yield a significant economic return for the country with an estimated net revenue of $2.1bn over the 30-year concession period,” said the AfDB’s country manager for Uganda, Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, who signed the deal on the bank’s behalf.
