Belgium receives new loan for utilities

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has granted EUR100m loan to Flanders water treatment services.

The EIB and the Flemish wastewater treatment company Aquafin have signed a new loan agreement to boost the treatment of waste water in Flanders.

The financing comes as the first tranche of the eleventh framework agreement between the two parties, which has a total value of EUR200m.

Under the plans, three new wastewater facilities will be built, as well as five existing installations being expanded.

The project will reduce the volume of untreated water and wastewater reaching the North Sea, meaning the loan qualified for the “Clean Oceans Initiative” – part of a drive for climate accountability by the EIB.
