RFI for NZ civic centre

A city in northern New Zealand has released a request for information (RFI) to look at options for developing a new civic centre.

Whangarei District Council currently operates from two main sites but wishes to consolidate these into one location either on land that is currently privately-owned within the central city core of Whangarei, or at a central council-owned site.

The broad indicative requirements are 5,000m2+, to allow for 350 staff. Project funding has been capped at $37m, however the council also has $10.5m allocated as partial funding for a New Theatre/Expo/ Conference Centre development.

While this is a separate project that has not had specifications developed yet, submitters may wish to consider future planning for this in their Civic Centre concepts.

A recently adopted City Centre Plan sets out a range of potential initiatives and associated outcomes that will help to form a “vibrant, attractive and experience driven centre for our district”. The council is keen to ensure that all opportunities are presented for consideration.

Responses are due by 28 September, with questions by 21 September.

A formal registration of interest is to be launched in October, followed by a request for proposals process from December to April.
