Scotland launches £200m capital programme

Scottish finance secretary John Swinney has announced a package of measures for 'shovel-ready' projects to boost the construction industry in 2013.

Alongside £46m being provided to local government to support existing capital projects, the Scottish government will provide £50m for housing schemes, £22m each for transport and regeneration projects, as well as £10m for health maintenance.

Money will also be provided for further and higher education, economic development projects and maintaining the justice estate.

"Just two weeks after the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement I can now confirm a programme of shovel ready projects we will take forward with immediate effect," said Swinney.

He also again called for borrowing powers to be given to the Scottish government, arguing that the Westminster government had stalled on providing a capital stimulus to Scotland in previous years.
