SCT minister Gerardo Ruiz confirmed that the ministry was currently assessing which mode of transport will best serve the route, which could see the construction of a suburban train and a light rail system or metro line, subject to public demand.
The original tender for the concession was declared void by the SCT in December 2009 after the sole bidder, railway infrastructure firm CAF, said it was unable to provide 100% of the financing. A tender for line 2 of the project system was also cancelled due to economic constraints and uncertainty of passenger demand.
The initial tender, estimated to cost $1.2bn, anticipated two phases including a 13.2km line from Chalco to La Paz and a second 17.2km line from La Paz to the Nezahualcóyotl station on metro line B.
