Brazil approves airport PPPs

Brazil’s federal government has given the green light for two airport PPPs totaling $5.52bn.

Civil aviation minister Wagner Bittencourt confirmed that tenders for the Galeão and Confins project, in Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, are scheduled to be launched in August, with bidding competitions expected in September.

Firms wishing to bid on the deals must have experience in airports with an annual traffic capacity of at least 35m passengers and majority shareholders of other airport concessions will not be able to participate in the process.

The news comes after the government released its airport logistics investment program, which revealed that a total of $3.5bn has been earmarked for work on 270 airports across the country in the first phase of the plan.

States in the northeast will receive the lion-share of the funding, with $1bn earmarked for 64 airports. In the north, $820m will be invested in 67 airports, with $434m set aside for 31 sites in the mid-west.

In addition, the south will receive a total of $1.3bn for 108 airports in the region.
