Auditors to probe waste PFIs

The National Audit Office (NAO) has announced plans to investigate the environment department’s oversight of three waste PFI projects.

Under the plans, the NAO will probe three waste incinerator projects built under PFI to “gain insight into the role of [environment department] Defra in promoting value for money in such projects”.

The three projects to be considered are Herefordshire Council and Worcestershire County Council’s EnviRecover scheme in Worcestershire; Norfolk County Council’s Willows Power & Recycling Centre scheme at King’s Lynn, Norfolk; and Surrey County Council’s Charlton Lane Eco Park scheme.

The announcement follows the launch in June of the NAO’s investigation into the performance and capability of the Education Funding Agency, which is currently procuring the first projects to be delivered under the PF2 initiative.
