HS2 hybrid bill published

The bill to give government the powers to construct and operate a high-speed rail line between London and Birmingham has been published.

The hybrid bill for the first phase of the controversial HS2 initiative will also give those affected by the route the right to petition Parliament both for and against the proposals.

“HS2 is the most ambitious and important infrastructure project in the UK since we built the M25 30 years ago, and in 30 more it will be just as integral a part of the nation’s prosperity,” said Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin.

The move follows the announcement on Friday that the High Speed Rail Preparation (paving) Act, giving ministers the power to spend money on important preparatory works, had received Royal Assent.
