The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has appointed a new chief engineer.

In his 28 years at the department, Lance Simmons has served in a variety of roles including Atlanta District’s director of operations, District Engineer for the Bryan District and most recently as TxDOT’s Director of Engineering and Safety Operations.

In his new role, he will direct and coordinate TxDOT’s statewide engineering and district operations to ensure the state’s transportation system is built and operated in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.

Simmons said he looks “forward to working with our districts as we continue to move forward with projects to maintain and enhance the safety of Texas state highways”.

Last year, TxDOT procured advisors to help drive its push towards P3s and other types of innovative financing – citing highways, tolls, rail and intermodal sectors as potential projects.
