UNECE unveils new PPP approach

The UN Economic Commission for Europe has unveiled a new methodology for PPP projects to align them with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Instead of focusing almost exclusively on economic effectiveness, the new methodology has five key aims, including reducing social inequality and increasing access to essential services; improving resilience and environmental sustainability; and promoting replicabaility.

“Traditional PPPs for infrastructure development present challenges and pose limitations to implement the 2030 Agenda and mobilise private funds into infrastructure development aligned with the SDGs,” the UNECE said.

“To address this issue, UNECE developed a new approach to PPPs for the SDGs that not only brings value for money but also value for people and value for the planet.”

During the launch event, the director of the PPP Unit of Kyrgyzstan, Sanzhar Bolotov, announced that his country will have several PPP projects evaluated using this tool.
