Members of the board voted 6-3 in favor of North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) continuing its work to explore the potential for the I-77 Express Lanes South P3 project, which was submitted to NCDOT by Spanish contractor Cintra.
The vote means NCDOT is continuing to gain support for the initiative and ensures that momentum on the scheme is maintained.
Last month, David Roy, chief financial officer of the North Carolina Turnpike Authority, told a Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) board meeting that a P3 option could be up to a decade faster to deliver the project than a traditional procurement.
Meanwhile, the CRTPO is due to meet today to discuss the project. A favorable decision would allow the NCDOT progress its analysis of the unsolicited P3 proposal.
