Birmingham appoints legal advisor to restructure highways PFI deal

Birmingham City Council has reappointed a legal advisor to support the restructuring of its highways PFI deal, as part of the settlement agreed in 2019.

The council is currently looking to appoint a permanent contractor to take over the work of private partner Amey, with Kier having been appointed to the role on an interim basis since 2019.

However, that deal also agreed the need for a restructured contract to be put in place for the remainder of the life of the PFI, which is due to run until 2035.

As a result, Birmingham has now reappointed DLA Piper to advise on the restructure ahead of the new contractor being appointed early next year. DLA has worked closely with the Birmingham Highways team for many years and will continue its work to support the procurement of a new operating subcontractor and restructuring of the project.
