Governor Gretchen Whitmer has selected a new permanent director for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).

Veteran MDOT official Brad Wieferich has been chosen for the role.

He’s held numerous leadership roles at the department, including most recently as acting director. Before that he was its chief operating officer.

Wieferich played a key role in the success of the Gordie Howe Bridge P3 procurement, which is now delivering one of the country’s flagship projects.

Commenting on his appointment, Wieferich said he looks forward to “continuing our work as a progressive and innovative agency that serves Michigan's communities".

In 2021, Governor Whitmer signed into law a bill package that paves the way for bridges to be delivered and repaired using P3.
