North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has appointed a new leader for the state’s Department of Transportation.

Current chief operating officer Joseph R. Hopkins will take over from Eric Boyettem, who is retiring.

Hopkins has been at NCDOT for over 30 years, including as its deputy chief engineer and division maintenance engineer.

Governor Cooper said he’s “confident that Hopkins will continue this outstanding work as Secretary of the Department of Transportation when he steps into this new role”.

In his time at the agency, NCDOT has embarked on a number of P3 projects, including the I-77 Managed Plans project north of Charlotte.

The department is currently weighing options for another managed lanes scheme south of the capital, sparked by a now-rejected unsolicited proposal by Cintra.
