Lack of clarity continues to hinder UK Net Zero push

The UK government’s failure to provide a stable and clear policy landscape for the delivery of Net Zero plans is hampering the industry’s ability to deliver, a new report has found.

Research carried out by consultancy Currie & Brown has warned that policy uncertainty - such as the government’s recent decision to push back some deadlines - is combining with the “multiple standards for, and definitions of” Net Zero to create a challenging landscape for the infrastructure community.

However, the UK Construction Market Outlook report suggests that the industry needs to work more collaboratively to establish its own standards and practices to enable the energy transition.

“Collaboration and coalescing around a common approach will be key to success,” said Nick Gray, chief operating officer for the UK and Europe at Currie & Brown. “This in turn should give the Government confidence in its ambitions and roadmap - and ultimately, enable both the industry, and the UK as a whole, to achieve its Net Zero targets.”

A recent report from Mission Zero Coalition called on the government to use partnerships with the private sector similar to Bristol’s City Leap initiative to deliver the changes necessary. That report was authored by former government Net Zero tsar, Chris Skidmore MP and Tees Valley Mayor, Lord Ben Houchen.
