The Biden Harris Administration has announced funding for seven regional clean hydrogen hubs.

The investments will look to “kickstart” the hydrogen economy, by targeting key sectors such as public transport, heavy trucking and local energy resources ranging from biogas in California, renewables in Oregon to natural gas in Texas.

The seven hubs are located in the Mid-Atlantic region, Appalachia, California, Gulf Coast, Central USA, Midwest, and the Pacific Northwest, and will negotiate on up to $7bn of funding, provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Under the plans, the hubs will catalyze over $40bn of private investment, including through various forms of partnerships.

Once operational, the hubs will aim to produce over three million metric tonnes of clean hydrogen per year, almost a third of the 2030 clean hydrogen production target.

“Advancing clean hydrogen is essential to achieving the president’s vision of a strong clean energy economy that strengthens energy security, bolsters domestic manufacturing, creates healthier communities, and delivers new jobs and economic opportunities across the nation,” the White House said.
