The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) has unveiled a new $1bn indigenous equity initiative aimed at providing loans to communities to purchase equity stakes in infrastructure projects.

The loans will be provided between $5-100m value for up to 90% equity interest for communities in projects that the CIB is also investing in.

According to the CIB, the program will “fill a market gap” that has historically been created by market lenders being unwilling to lend to Indigenous communities against equity stakes.

“Enabling Indigenous participation is an important element in ensuring new infrastructure projects across Canada can bring long-term economic benefits to Indigenous communities,” said the CIB.
